Alternative Products
We are often asked our views on protective duvet and pillow cases or special bed covers and told about different types of
duvets or beds that prevent dust mites.
On every mattress, duvet and pillow that we have ever tested, there has not been one product that has tested negative. Every
item has shown the presence of dust mites, and unfortunately we cannot ascertain if these products have made any improvement
to the level of dust mites present.
Our advice is, if you are suffering from an allergy and are looking for a way to feel better then try what you think is right
for you. Certainly don't stop using something if you are comfortable sleeping with it - if that means protective bedding sheets
or a special duvet, then it is better to have taken some positive action than none. However, if you do decide on protective
covers, ensure that the particular item you are encasing is either new or has been sterilized and cleaned first, otherwise
you may only be incubating whatever is already inside your mattress or bedding.
Secondly, if you decide to use an anti-dust mite spray, try to find one that is chemical free, for safety reasons and one
that is clear, so there is little or no chance of staining. Some sprays may only be suitable for certain areas of the home,
or may be hazardous to pets and babies, requiring a long time for airing. Also make sure that you don't use these around the
house where there is food and cutlery. Some of these sprays may also suggest cleaning the items they are to be used on first,
see our comments on vacuuming yourself and the importance of hot washes. Always read the instructions carefully and keep away
from young children as with any household products.
If you are looking for the perfect spray to do all of the above, we recommend DUSTROY anti-allergen spray which can be purchased
at the time of our visit.
